Quebec’s Updated Dental Infection-Control Guidelines: Review Your Protocols—and Your Supplies

3BS Dahabi sterilization pouches, biological indicator, Type 5 integrator and indicator tape.

Quebec dental teams have an important reason to review their instrument-reprocessing procedures. The updated guidelines from the Ordre des dentistes du Québec (ODQ) and the Ordre des hygiénistes dentaires du Québec (OHDQ) address sterilization monitoring, package labelling, records and the organization of the reprocessing area.

For dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants, a practical starting point is to compare the clinic’s current procedures and supplies with the latest guidance.

What should your team review?

The ODQ identifies several key changes in Chapter 6, including chemical indicators, biological testing frequency, information recorded on sterilization packages, reprocessing records and reprocessing-area layout.

The guidelines contain both requirements and recommendations. “Must” indicates a requirement; “should” indicates a recommendation. Consult the complete document to understand what applies to your practice.

The ODQ states that the guidelines took effect upon publication, with a two-year implementation period specifically for the Chapter 6 changes. The OHDQ lists the original publication as October 2024 and a revision as February 2026.

Does your clinic have the appropriate monitoring supplies?

As you review your procedures, check your inventory too:

  • Are your biological indicators suitable for the sterilizer cycles you use?
  • Do you have the appropriate chemical indicators and integrators?
  • Are you running low on your usual monitoring consumables?
  • Does your team know which product references to reorder?

Product selection depends on the sterilizer, cycle and manufacturer’s instructions. For example, 1492V biological indicators are intended for specified dynamic-air-removal steam cycles, so they should not be treated as a universal option for every autoclave. Manufacturer’s selection guide.
